SUMMARY: A science teacher teaches one or more curriculum subjects related to science to pupils in grades 6-12. Teachers may use creativity, humor and imagination to develop schemes of work and to plan lessons in order to foster a healthy culture of learning within the classroom and to generate the most effective interactions with pupils.

The science teacher is responsible for providing accommodations to students who function on an IEP. When a student's IEP is due, the science teacher will be an active and contributing participant for the IEP team.

Teachers encourage, monitor and record the progress of individual pupils, and devise and tailor resources accordingly. They must also keep up to date with developments in their subject area, new resources, methods and national and state objectives/standards.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with Pennsylvania Certification in Science.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Planning curriculum and preparing lessons, course objectives and other instructional materials to meet individual need of students, considering state and school requirements/standards, physical, emotional, and educational levels of development.
  • Correcting work, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of student progress and development
  • Researching new topic areas, maintaining up-to-date subject knowledge and then devising and writing new curriculum materials
  • Selecting and using a range of different learning resources and equipment
  • Supporting students on an individual basis through academic or personal difficulties
  • Preparing students for state exams PSSA, Keystone
  • Managing student behavior in the classroom and on school premises, and applying appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehavior
  • Participating in and organizing extracurricular activities, such as outings, social activities
  • Participating in departmental meetings, parent meetings and whole school training events
  • Liaising with other professionals, such as special education teachers, educational psychologists, etc.
  • Undergoing regular observations and participating in in-service training as part of continuing professional development
  • Utilizing a variety of assessment techniques to monitor student performance.
  • Maximizing student time on task.
  • Maintaining appropriate records on each student including completing all pre and post testing in academic areas and report cards upon discharge from program.
  • Implementing individualized education plans for students with a disability
  • Completing grade progress reports, report cards, IEP progress reports, lesson plans and any other required paperwork by the due date 

Exhibiting professionalism which includes: 

  • Supervising students and following schedules.
  • Using behavior management techniques
  • Using appropriate counseling techniques to assist in the client's treatment
  • Interacting with the resident's in a respectful manner that is appropriate for the situation.
  • Knowing and functioning within the framework of the resident's Treatment Plan.
  • Completing additional duties as may be assigned.
  • Honoring Pennsylvania's Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators

PROBATION EXPECTATIONS: Must demonstrate during probation competencies in the following areas:


  1. Teaching
  2. Teaching in an MH/MR Setting
  3. Participating in IEP development with teacher of record
  4. Working with MH/MR Clients
  5. Entering information on IEP Progress Reports for goals related to Science or in some cases on behavior in the classroom
  6. Entering information on weekly update sheets for community students
